WESTMINSTER, Md. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team
completed its 2008-09 season with a seventh place finish out of
eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by
McDaniel College on Saturday afternoon.
The Merchant Marine Academy claimed the title with 116.0 points and
were followed by Ursinus (66.0), McDaniel (54.0), Muhlenberg
(53.5), Stevens (47.0), Gettysburg (29.0), W&L (27.0) and Johns
Hopkins (19.0).
The Generals had three placewinners at the championships led by
first-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep), who went
3-1 to place third in the 125-pound weight class. Ersing opened
with a pin of McDaniel's Sean Ensign (1:54), but was defeated by
Alex Black of Ursinus with a technical fall (17-2) in 5:18. He then
advanced by injury default and pinned Gettysburg's Abe Evans in
1:22 in the third-place match.
First-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) finished fourth
at 133 pounds. Campbell fell to Muhlenberg's Billy Hall in his
opener, but defeated Getttysburg's Michael Slabinski, 12-8. He then
advanced past Stevens' Mark Bistis by disqualification, but was a
medical forfeit in the third-place match.
First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) also finished
fourth in the 157-pound weight class. He opened with a 5-3 win over
Scott Lowe of the Merchant Marines, but then lost to Andrew
Goldstein of Gettysburg, 11-6. Dennis then pinned Keith Swanson of
Muhlenberg in 2:20, before dropping a 10-8 decision to Stevens' Leo
Dormann in the third-place match.
