Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior forward Zac White
(Baltimore, Md./Park School) scored a game-high 20 points and
junior guard Jason Cimino (Branchburg, N.J./Immaculata) added a
career-high 13 points to lead the Washington and Lee men's
basketball team to a 76-62 win over Ferrum on Wednesday afternoon
at the Warner Center.
W&L (6-2) used a 15-4 run over the final
7:14 of the first half to turn a 22-17 lead into a 37-21 cushion at
the break. Six different Generals scored during the run and the
Panthers (5-5) shot just 1-for-6 while turning the ball over four
times.
In the second half, Ferrum cut the
Generals' lead to single digits at 50-41 when senior guard
Jerrell Wade (Ferrum, Va./Franklin County) hit a layup at the 11:03
mark. W&L, which never trailed in the contest, quickly pushed
the margin up to 14 points (57-43) on a layup by senior forward
Andrew Payne (Charleston, W. Va./George Washington) with 7:43 to
play.
The Generals connected on 10-of-13 free throws
in the last five minutes to secure the victory and halt
Ferrum's winning streak at four games.
White hit on 6-of-9 shots from the field as
well as 7-of-7 charity tosses in reaching the 20-point plateau for
the second time this season. He also added a pair of blocks and two
steals. Cimino was 3-of-5 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line
in posting a new career-best in scoring. He also had a team-high
five assists. Sophomore guard Jon Guest (West Hartford,
Conn./Kingswood-Oxford) added 11 points and four assists, while
Payne finished with eight points and a game-high nine boards and
senior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) had nine points
and eight rebounds.
As a team, W&L was 17-of-22 from the
free-throw line, compared to just 6-of-9 for Ferrum. The Generals
also outrebounded the Panthers, 38-29, and forced Ferrum into 15
turnovers.
The Panthers were led by sophomore guard Daryl
Hart's (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) team-high 17 points.
Wade added 15 points, while sophomore forward Nick English
(Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) and junior forward Garry Brandt
(Forest, Va./Jefferson Forest) chipped in 13 and 12 points,
respectively.
The Generals return to action on Saturday on
day one of the W&L Invitational when they host Swarthmore at
2:00 pm.
