HOLLINS, Va. – Seventh-seeded Roanoke College recovered
from a 2-0 deficit to post an 18-25, 15-25, 25-20, 27-25, 19-17
victory over second-seeded Washington and Lee in the quarterfinals
of the ODAC Volleyball Tournament held on the campus of Hollins
University on Friday evening.
The loss ends W&L's season at 19-14 overall and snaps a
string of eight-straight conference tournament titles for the
Generals. It was also the Maroons first victory over Washington and
Lee since the 2000 season.
W&L jumped out to a 2-0 lead after taking the first two sets by
scores of 25-18 and 25-15. However, the Maroons won the third set
25-20 and then staved off elimination with a 27-25 win in the
fourth set. The Generals held a 14-13 lead in the fifth set and
were serving for the match, but Roanoke battled to tie the score at
14-14 and eventually took the upper hand in improving to 14-6 on
the season.
W&L was paced by senior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa,
Fla./Tampa Prep), who totaled 20 kills, 12 digs and four blocks.
Junior outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) posted
20 kills and 11 digs, while junior middle blocker Louise Brooks
(Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) added 15 kills and six digs.
Senior setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission
South) amassed 59 assists and 12 digs, while first-year libero
Cameron Hill (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant) notched 23 digs.
Roanoke advances to Saturday's semifinals, when it will take
on either third-seeded Lynchburg College or sixth-seeded Virginia
Wesleyan.
