Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. – Mary Washington used a 9-0 run late in
the second half to pull away for a 64-55 victory over Washington
and Lee in the women's basketball season opener for both
teams on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
The Eagles (1-0) held a 49-47 lead at the 5:58 mark of the second
half, but used a 9-0 run over the next 1:48 for a 58-47 lead with
4:10 remaining. Sophomore guard Katie Wimmer (Vienna, Va./James
Madison) recorded five points during the decisive run.
The Generals (0-1) pulled to within seven points (58-51) following
a three-pointer by sophomore guard Meg Ingram (Greensboro,
N.C./Ragsdale) and a free-throw by sophomore forward Becca Bolton
(Pittsboro, N.C./Chatham Central) at the 2:26 mark, but could get
no closer.
The Generals raced out to an eight-point lead (20-12) with 9:25
remaining in the first half, but the Eagles chipped away at the
lead and held a 30-29 advantage at the break en route to their
fourth-straight win over W&L.
Ingram and Bolton led the Generals with 16 points apiece, while
first-year guard Katy Wilson (Chattanooga, Tenn./Baylor) tallied
eight points and three steals.
Mary Washington was paced by sophomore guard Jenna McRae
(Springfield, Va./Annandale), who notched 14 points and seven
rebounds. Wimmer tallied 13 points, while sophomore center Claire
Brooks (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) chipped in 11 points and five
boards.
W&L returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Christopher
Newport for the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Start
time is slated for 4:00 pm.
