LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
extended its shutout streak to six games with a 4-0 win over
Roanoke in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday
afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
Senior forward Alex Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side Academy)
put the Generals on the board less than four minutes into the game
when classmate Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) fed her in
front of the cage for the game's first goal.
Senior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's)
made it 2-0 in favor of W&L when she scored unassisted at the
6:20 mark. Senior defender Grace McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd
E. McKellam) added another unassisted goal at 29:32 to give the
Generals a 3-0 halftime lead.
Caritis finished the scoring when she netted her second goal of
the game at the 47:16 mark for a 4-0 W&L advantage.
Senior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens'
& St. Agnes) and first-year Kirsten Kyne (Baltimore, Md./Loch
Raven) each played a half in goal for W&L and neither keeper
had to make a save.
Cristina Schicilone (South Yarmouth, Mass./Nauset Regional) made
eight saves for Roanoke and first-year defender Ashley Fuhrer
(Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown High School) added a defensive save as
W&L outshot the Maroons, 24-5.
With the win, the Generals advance to take on second-seeded
Eastern Mennonite in the semifinal round on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
