LEXINGTON, Va. – Sophomore forward Allie Espina
(Gaithersburg, Md./Our Lady of Good Counsel) recorded two goals as
the Washington and Lee women's soccer team defeated
Bridgewater, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.
Espina recorded her first goal in the 17th minute, finding the back
of the net off a header from a cross by first-year Ainsley Daigle
(Lafayette, La./Episcopal School of Acadiana). Her second goal of
the match came off a mishandled ball by sophomore Bridgewater
(13-5-1, 7-4 ODAC) goalie Cari Hensley (Danville, Va./George
Washington), as Espina picked up the rebound to score in the 71st
minute.
Bridgewater would respond with a breakaway goal by first-year
midfielder Jacey Kelley in the 73rd minute, but it would not be
enough as the Generals (14-1-2, 9-0-2 ODAC) held on for the 2-1
victory.
Sophomore goalie Emily Leary (Cincinnati, Ohio/Kings) played all
90:00 in net for the Generals, allowing one goal while recording
two saves. Hensley also played the duration for Bridgewater,
allowing two goals and notching seven saves.
The Generals return to action Saturday as they host a quarterfinal
match in the ODAC Tournament at Watt Field. Opponent and time are
TBD.
