VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Senior forward Steph Mansey (Mendham,
N.J./Randolph) notched a hat trick and senior forward Sallie
Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) added two goals and an
assist as the Washington and Lee field hockey team set a
school-record with its fifth-consecutive shutout with a 6-0 win
over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at the National
Training Center.
Senior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St.
Stephen's & St. Agnes) and first-year keeper Kirsten Kyne
(Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven) split time in the cage and combined to
make five saves as W&L's shutout streak continued. The
Generals (9-6, 5-2 ODAC) have not allowed a goal since the second
half of a 6-0 loss to Eastern Mennonite on October 7, a stretch of
430:01.
Mansey gave the Generals all the offense that they would need when
she tallied an unassisted goal at the 5:05 mark of the first half.
Armstrong quickly made it 2-0 when sophomore forward Christina
Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) set her up off a penalty corner
at 9:08.
The Generals tallied twice more before the half on unassisted
markers by Armstrong (27:58) and Mansey (29:32) to take control of
the contest.
Benedetti scored an unassisted goal of her own at the 57:25 mark
in the second half to make it 5-0 and Armstrong set up Mansey on
the doorstep 19 seconds later for the final 6-0 margin.
VWC (4-13, 2-5) goalkeepers Chesley Baker and Emily Raddatz split
time in goal. Baker allowed a pair of goals and made five saves,
while Raddatz allowed four goals and also made five saves as
W&L outshot the Marlins 23-8.
W&L will now await its opponent for the first round of the
ODAC Tournament. The Generals will host an opening round game at a
time that is yet to be determined.
