LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team
posted its third-straight shutout win with a 1-0 overtime victory
over Rhodes on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
W&L junior midfielder Emmy Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr)
found senior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St.
John's) in front of the Rhodes cage, who proceeded to rebound
her own missed shot and put it past senior Meghan Cullen (Chapel
Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) for the game's only tally in the
73rd minute.
For Armstrong, it was her 12th goal of the season and the 51st of
her career.
Despite holding a 12-4 advantage in shots and an 11-4 advantage in
penalty corners, the Generals were unable to slip a shot by Cullen
in regulation. She made four saves for Rhodes (8-3) while W&L
(7-6) senior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St.
Stephen's & St. Agnes) came up with three saves for the
Generals.
Sophomore defender Sara Sanders (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) added
a defensive save for Rhodes.
Before the game, the Generals honored their five seniors for their
contributions to W&L field hockey. Armstrong, Habliston, Steph
Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph), Grace McGee (Virginia Beach,
Va./Floyd E. Kellam) and Alex Caritis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shady Side
Academy) have posted a won-loss record of 42-28 in their four
seasons for the Blue and White and have appeared in the semifinals
of the conference tournament on three occasions.
W&L returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Sewanee at 4:00
pm.
