LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) registered the game-winning goal to help the 2008 Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Centre in the Glenn Hyundai College Classic hosted by Transylvania on Saturday afternoon at Hall Field.
The Colonels (0-2) got on board first when sophomore midfielder Brittany Garr found the back of the net unassisted at 40:03. The Generals (1-0) answered back when first-year midfielder Hannah Deming (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) connected with first-year defender Corinne Smith (Greensboro, N.C./Grimsley), who headed it into the net at 42:50 to tie the contest, 1-1, going into the half.
W&L got on board again at 60:43, when Van Devender slipped one past Centre junior goalkeeper Rosie McAuley to give the Blue and White its first lead of the game. Senior forward Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) added an insurance goal at 62:37 for the 3-1 final.
Senior Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire contest for W&L and registered three saves, while McAuley stopped one shot for CC.
Washington and Lee returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the Glenn Hyundai College Classic. The Generals take on host Transylvania at 3:30 pm.
