Armstrong Leads W&L Field Hockey to 3-1 Win over St. Mary's (Md.)

LEXINGTON, Va. – Junior forward Sallie Armstrong's (Houston, Texas/St. John's) two goals provided the spark, as the W&L field hockey team downed visiting St. Mary's (Md.), 3-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Generals improved to 2-5 on the season with the win while St. Mary's falls to 4-5.

Armstrong put Washington and Lee on the board just 2:17 into the game with her third goal of the season. Senior forward Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) was credited with the assist. St. Mary's was able to knot the score at one at the 32:04 mark when, Emily Norris (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) scored an unassisted goal for the Seahawks.

In the second half, it was Armstrong with the quick goal once again as she collected a pass from sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and put ball past Seahawk keeper Emma Lauhoff (Wayne, Pa./Radnor) at the 38:30 mark. Senior defender Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) added an insurance goal late in the second half off a feed from junior defender Grace McGee (Virginia Beach, Va./Floyd E. Kellam).

Junior goalkeeper Caroline Habliston (St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) played the entire game in the cage for W&L and recorded one save. The W&L defensive unit was outstanding as it limited the Seahawks to just four shots on the game. Mathews also recorded a defensive save.

In addition to a stout defensive performance, the Generals unleashed a season-high 24 shots, including 10 on goal.

The Generals return to the field on Friday as they host Eastern Mennonite at 6:30 pm.
