VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Junior midfielder Stacey Zeiler tallied the game-winning goal to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 2-1 win over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Foster Field.
The Marlins (3-1-2, 3-0) got on board first when junior forward Jerilyn Sweeney found the back of the net off of a sophomore forward Courtney Whorten assist at 18:35 to take a 1-0 edge at the half.
Both teams remained scoreless over the next 39:27, until VWC's first-year forward Katie Kooiman found Zeiler, who tallied the game-winner at 58:02 (2-0). Junior midfielder Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) notched the Generals' lone goal at 88:53 (2-1), but it would not be enough as the Marlins held on for the one-goal victory.
W&L (3-2-1, 1-1) senior goalkeeper Kiki Moreo (Westport, Conn./Staples) played the entire 90:00 and registered seven saves, while junior Allison Lennox also played the full duration and stopped seven shots for VWC.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Hollins for a 4:00 pm game.
