W&L Volleyball Splits Matches on Day One of Emory National Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The W&L volleyball team's unbeaten streak ended at eight matches as the Generals fell to Maryville (Tenn.), 3-2, in the opening match of the Emory National Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Generals then defeated Macalaster, 3-0, in their second match of the day.

W&L (9-1) fell to Maryville (11-3) by the scores of 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 19-25, 14-16 and defeated Macalaster (4-7) 25-17, 25-19, 25-18. Prior to the match against Maryville, the Generals had not dropped a set all season, a string of 24 consecutive sets.

In the loss to Maryville the Blue and White received 11 kills from sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and 10 kills from both senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa/Gettysburg) and junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep). Schmitz also led the Generals with 24 digs with Phillips and Ulrich chipping in 10 and six, respectively. Junior setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) was credited with 23 assists and seven digs in the loss.

Phillips posted a season-high 14 digs in the victory over Macalaster to lead W&L. Junior right side Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Phillips both recorded a team-high 10 digs, while junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) added seven digs and 19 assists.

Washington and Lee will face several tough matches on Saturday, beginning with a match against No. 7 Wittenberg at 11:30 am, followed by a 2:00 pm showdown with No. 2 Emory.
