OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The W&L field hockey team fell to #10 Johns Hopkins, 2-1 in overtime, on Sunday in a game played at Stevenson College. The overtime loss marked the second straight tough-luck loss for W&L as the Generals lost to McDaniel, 2-1 in a shootout, on Saturday.
Sophomore midfielder Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) put Washington and Lee (0-4) up 1-0 less than 10 minutes into the game when she collected the rebound off a shot from junior forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) and put it past JHU's Sophia Tieu. For Mathews, the reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year, it was her first career goal.
The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Generals until the 39th minute, when JHU tied the game on Brittany Bland's second goal of the season as she deflected a Leah Horton shot past junior netminder Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephens & St. Agnes). In overtime, the Blue Jays scored just 58 seconds into the extra period to send W&L to its second tough defeat in as many days.
Habliston, who was peppered with shots all day, made 13 saves to keep the game in reach, while her JHU counterpart stopped five shots. For the game, the Generals were outshot 25-7.
W&L returns to the field on Saturday when it hosts Catholic at 1:00 pm.
