COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished eighth out of eight teams at the Centennial Conference Championship hosted by Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon.
The United States Merchant Marine Academy took first place with 99.5 points and was followed by Ursinus (68.5), Stevens Tech (60.0), Johns Hopkins (45.0), Gettysburg (35.5), Muhlenberg (34.5), McDaniel (28.0) and W&L (25.5).
Individually, the Generals had four place-winners led by senior 165-pounder Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers), who finished as the runner-up. Boniello knocked off Jordan Chacon of Stevens Tech, 5-1, in the opening match and downed Ursinus' Mike Schwaher, 12-8, to advance to the championship match. However, he fell to Johns Hopkins' Paul Stanley in the finals, 7-1.
Senior 133-pounder David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) and senior 149-pounder Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee) both claimed third place in their respective weight classes, while senior Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) finished fourth in the 184-pound bracket.
Shubick notched an opening-round bye, but fell to Dan Glover of Ursinus, 2-0, in the semifinals. He then defeated Xavier Mohammed of Johns Hopkins, 12-4, and Mark Bistis of Stevens Tech, 4-2, to claim the consolation championship.
Lawrence posted a 9-7 decision over Ursinus' Chris Springer in his first round match, but was defeated by Matt Shank of Gettysburg in the semifinals, 19-2. He then posted a 7-4 win over James Crumlish of Johns Hopkins and knocked off Springer again, 11-5, in the consolation championship.
Adamson dropped his opener to Matthew Horn of Muhlenberg, 7-0, but recovered to defeat Drew Wolenter of Gettysburg, 16-0. He then fell to Horn again in the consolation championship, 4-3, to finish fourth overall.
Washington and Lee finished its 2007-08 season with a 7-5 overall record.
