W&L Volleyball Claims Eighth Straight ODAC Championship

ROANOKE, Va. -- The Washington and Lee volleyball team defeated Lynchburg, 3-0, in the championship match of the ODAC Tournament to capture its eighth-straight conference title.

With the 25-19, 25-18, 25-23, victory, the Generals now stand at 31-6 on the season while Lynchburg wraps ups the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 16-16. W&L advanced to the finals on the strength of a 25-15, 26-24, 15-15 sweep of Bridgewater.

For W&L head coach Bryan Snyder, this is the fourth time that he has led the Generals to at least 30 wins in a season, and the first time since they won 32 matches in 2005.

Senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) paced the Generals' attack against Bridgewater with 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) added 10 and junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) eight. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) led W&L with 13 digs and junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) chipped in 10 to go with 28 assists.

In the Championship tilt, Washington and Lee was paced by junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) who totaled 11 kills and 11 digs and senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) who added 10 kills and seven digs. Senior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) chipped in nine kills and 11 digs, while junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) totaled 39 assists to go with nine digs.

Phillips was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts and Ulrich was honored as the Tournament MVP.

Washington and Lee will be notified of its opponent in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament sometime on Sunday.
