LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team opened its 2008-09 season by hosting the W&L Fall Classic on Saturday morning at Doremus Gymnasium.
No team scoring was kept and four schools (Longwood, Newport News Apprentice, Southern Virginia and W&L) competed in each of the 10 weight classes.
Three individuals went 2-0 on the day to pace Washington and Lee led by sophomore Marshall Olszewski (Manchester, Md./McDonogh), who posted a pair of wins by pin in the 157-pound bracket. Olszewski first knocked off Ray O'Connor of Newport News Apprentice with a fall in 1:37, then he pinned Southern Virginia's Josh Pace in 2:17.
At 133 pounds, first-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) went 2-0, defeating Newport News Apprentice's Todd Gular in his first match, 15-6, then downing Southern Virginia's Brandon Flood, 15-6.
First-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) also went 2-0 in the 149-pound bracket. Dennis notched a pin over Jake Shearer of Southern Virginia (1:48) and then downed NNA's Ricky Anderson, 4-2.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Sun., Nov. 16 as it travels to Collegeville, Pa., to take part in the Ursinus Invitational beginning at 9:30 am.
