Balanced Offense Leads Generals Past Emory & Henry, 78-65

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) led four Generals in double-figures with a season-high 16 points as the Washington and Lee men's basketball team opened ODAC play with a 78-65 win over Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.

The Wasps (3-3, 0-1 ODAC) jumped out to an early 7-2 lead just 3:29 into the contest before the Generals (4-2, 1-0) responded with a 26-5 run over the next 9:41 to take a 28-12 lead en route to a 35-23 halftime advantage. Senior forward Ben Heller (Houston, Texas/Lamar) scored eight of his 15 points during the run, while junior forward Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) scored six of his 16 points to help W&L pull away.

In the second half, Emory & Henry pulled to within six (56-50) following a free throw by senior guard Jarell Christian (Quinton, Va./New Kent) at the 5:59 mark. However, the Generals proceeded to score the game's next eight points to extend their lead to 64-50 with 4:40 to go. The Wasps would get as close as eight in the final three minutes, but W&L was 7-of-8 at the stripe down the stretch to emerge with the victory.

Washington and Lee shot 48.3 percent from the floor compared to 37.5 percent for Emory & Henry and owned a 53-29 advantage on the boards.

Heller added eight rebounds to go with his 15 points, while Goodman added five assists and three rebounds. Goetsch, who was 8-of-10 from the floor, chipped in five boards and first-year Jonathan Guest (West Hartford, Conn./Kinswood-Oxford) added a career-high 11 points.

Sophomore Terrance Grigg (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) led the Wasps with 12 points, senior guard Robert Hudson (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) added 11 points and senior forward Kyle Huckins (Knoxville, Tenn./Knox-Farragut) and junior forward Josh Brown (Mt. Airy, N.C./Millersburg Military) chipped in 10 points apiece.

W&L returns to action on Monday when it will travels to Ferrum for a 7:00 pm contest.
