W&L Field Hockey Stumbles to Mary Washington, 2-1

LEXINGTON, Va. – Looking to extend its two-game winning streak, the W&L field hockey team fell, 2-1, to Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.

A scoreless first half turned into a flurry of offense in the second, as all three goals were scored in a five minute span. UWM (6-4) got on the board first when junior Chelsea Brown (Medford Lakes, N.J./Shawnee) put a ball past W&L junior keeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) at the 45:18 mark.

The 1-0 lead was short lived, as the Generals responded at 49:42 with sophomore Kathy Brown's (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) first goal of the season off an assist from sophomore Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr).

UMW would score the game-winner roughly a minute later when junior Sarah Trimble (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) found the back of the cage. Sophomore Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va./York) assisted on both goals for the Eagles.

Habliston made three saves for the Generals, while sophomore Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) made seven for the Eagles.

Washington and Lee returns to action with a trip to Roanoke on Thursday for a 6:30 pm game.
