W&L Field Hockey Upsets No. 17 Christopher Newport, 3-2

LEXINGTON, Va. – The W&L field hockey team, playing in its last regular season game, received two goals and an assist from junior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) on its way to upsetting No. 17 Christopher Newport, 3-2 in overtime, on Sunday afternoon.

Following Saturday's four-goal effort, Armstrong picked up where she left off and gave W&L (9-8) an early 1-0 lead on the Captains (11-5) when she scored unassisted at the 17:20 mark.

The scored would remain at 1-0 in favor of the Generals until CNU junior Kim Tomlin (Virginia Beach, Va./Landstown) scored at the 44:33 mark to knot the score at 1-1. CNU took a 2-1 lead when junior Anne Gehring (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) put a ball past the Generals' Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) at the 50:13 mark. Tomlin assisted on the goal for the Captains.

With under five minutes remaining in the contest, it was Armstrong who once again tallied for the Generals as she scored an unassisted goal at he 64:58 mark to pull W&L even at 2-2.

With neither team able to find the go-ahead goal in the game's final minutes, the teams prepared for overtime. In the extra period, it was sophomore Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) who netted the game-winner following a pass from Armstrong to send W&L to its ninth win of the season.

W&L was outshot 19-11, but Habliston came up with five saves, four of them in the second half, and sophomore Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) added a defensive save.

W&L will now await word on who it will play in the ODAC Tournament, beginning on Saturday. W&L will host a first-round game by virtue of its fourth-place finish in the league.
