LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sallie Armstrong's (Houston, Texas/St. John's) career day highlighted what was a 5-1 victory for the W&L field hockey team over visiting Sweet Briar.
Armstrong scored four goals, all in the first half, to tie the single-game goals record at W&L. With the four goals, Armstrong also moved into sole possession of second place all-time at W&L in both points (86) and goals (36). Additionally, her first goal of the game came just 22 seconds into the game, making it the fastest goal scored in W&L history.
W&L (8-8, 5-2 ODAC) jumped on the Vixens early when senior Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) fed Armstrong for her first goal less than 30 seconds in. The Generals struck again in the fifth minute when Armstrong scored off a corner, courtesy of passes from senior Louise Bance (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's) and sophomore Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr). At the 31:57 mark, Armstrong again scored off a penalty corner, this time courtesy of Bance and first-year Christina Benedetti.
Armstrong's first half barrage ended when she tallied her fourth and final goal following a feed from sophomore Poppy Hall (Towson, Md./Garrison Forest) with three seconds remaining in the period.
Senior Melissa Dolan (Centennial, Colo./Kent Denver) capped the scoring for W&L when she netted an unassisted marker at the 67:40 mark.
The Vixens' (4-8, 0-6) Lindsay Eneguess scored an unassisted goal with just over a minute remaining to account for the final score.
W&L outshot SBC 27-3, including an 18-2 advantage in shots on goal. Junior keeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes) played the duration in the cage and notched one save for the Generals. First-year Madeline Wilson made 13 saves for the Vixens.
