HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The W&L volleyball team pushed Juniata, ranked No. 1 in Division III, to five games before falling, 3-2, on Friday night as it took part in the Wid Guisler Invitational hosted by Juniata.
The Generals drop to 23-5 on the season with the 11-25, 26-24, 25-27, 25-23, 7-15 loss, while Juniata improves to 24-3.
W&L was led by senior Laura Maurer's (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) 14 kills, with classmate Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) adding 11 and junior Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) chipping in 10. Junior Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) totaled 22 digs to pace the Generals, while Phillips had 21 and Maurer 18. Junior Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) contributed 40 assists.
The Generals have lost to several highly ranked opponents this season, as Juniata (No. 1), Emory (No. 2), Wittenberg (No. 7) and Christopher Newport (No. 21) have all been ranked at the time that they beat W&L.
Washington and Lee continues play on Saturday, with a 1:00 pm match against Carnegie Mellon, followed by a 3:00 pm match with New York University (NYU).
