LEXINGTON, Va. – First-year forward Kat Barnes (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) registered her first-ever collegiate hat trick and dished out one assist to lead the Washington and Lee women's soccer team to a 5-2 triumph over Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.
The Generals struck early when senior forward Anne Van Devender (Jackson, Miss./Choate Rosemary Hall) connected with Barnes, who found the back of the net at the 6:13 mark. Senior midfielder Katie Kern (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) then blasted a shot past UMW senior netminder Laura McCarthy (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) just 7:10 later. Kern added another marker off of an assist from Barnes at 24:50 to take a 3-0 lead, however, UMW countered just 1:24 later when junior forward Kate Parvin (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) scored unassisted and sliced it to a two-goal game entering the half.
Barnes helped pad the Generals' lead in the second half with a pair of unassisted goals at 50:14 and 60:07, respectively, to give the Generals a 5-1 lead. The Eagles answered back in the 70th minute when first-year forward Nicole Dierkes (Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson) fed the ball to first-year defender Amy Olson (Crofton, Md./Arundel), who snuck a shot past W&L first-year netminder Emily Leary (Loveland, Ohio/Kings), but it would not be enough as the Blue and White held on for the three-goal victory.
Washington and Lee (9-4) outshot Mary Washington 23-9 and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Leary played the entire game between the pipes and registered two saves for W&L, while UMW's (7-5-4) McCarthy and first-year Grace Rosales (Vienna, Va./Madison) split time in goal and combined to stop eight shots.
W&L returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Emory & Henry for a 4:00 pm game.
