BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The W&L Field Hockey team defeated Bridgewater, 3-1, on Tuesday afternoon to even its overall record at 6-6 while improving to 3-1 in the ODAC. With the loss Bridgewater slips to 7-8 on the season and 1-4 in league play.
W&L held a 25-4 advantage in shots on its way to scoring three goals for the fifth time in its last six games.
First-year Christina Benedetti (Derwood, Md./Holy Cross) opened the scoring for the Generals when she netted her third goal of the season off an assist from senior Louise Bance (Manakin-Sabot, Va./St. Catherine's). W&L pushed its lead to 2-0 at the break when sophomore Poppy Hall (Towson, Md./Garrison Forest) scored following a feed from senior Stephanie Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph).
The Generals extended the lead to 3-0 when sophomore Kathy Brown (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) fed junior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) at the 43:45 mark. For Armstrong, it was her seventh goal of the season and her fourth in the last three games.
Bridgewater got on the board with just over 22 minutes remaining when Kristin Combs was able to slip an unassisted goal past junior keeper Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes).
Habliston earned the win as she played the duration in the cage and recorded two saves. Elizabeth Sullivan notched eight saves for the Eagles.
W&L returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan at 1:30 pm.
