LEXINGTON, Va. – The W&L field hockey team scored with no time remaining to eke out a 3-2 win over visiting Kenyon College and improve to 5-6 on the season.
Following a penalty corner at the tail end of regulation, W&L was granted a second corner after time had expired as Kenyon had failed to clear the first one. Given a second chance, W&L made Kenyon pay as sophomore Poppy Hall (Towson, Md./Garrison Forest) put a pass from sophomore Jennie Norcini (Wayne, Pa./Episcopal) into the back of the cage with no time remaining to propel the Generals to the 3-2 victory. For Hall, it was her first goal of the season, while Norcini was also credited with a defensive save.
W&L had jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 20:25 mark when junior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Ladies answered when first-year Abby Westcott (Lake Forest, Ill./St. Andrew's) put a ball past junior Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) to make it 1-1 heading to the break.
Kenyon would go up 2-1 in the second half when sophomore Sophia Daly (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) scored off an assist from senior Jenny Howard (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) at the 45:27 mark.
However, the Generals answered quickly when senior Liz Garson (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) ripped a shot past KC's Karen Thompson (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) following a pass from Armstrong.
Despite several opportunities for both teams in the waning minutes, neither team could push across the game-winner until Hall's heroics at the end.
For the game, the Generals outshot the Ladies 23-9 and held an 11-2 advantage in corners.
W&L is in action on Tuesday when travels to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm game.
