DANVILLE, Va. -- The W&L volleyball team rode a balanced offensive attack to a 3-0 sweep of Salem as it opened play in the Averett Invitational on Friday afternoon. W&L then defeated the host team, Averett, 3-0 in the nightcap.
In the 25-13, 25-16, 25-14 defeat of the Spirits, the Generals (17-4) were led by first-year outside hitter Megan Daily (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), sophomore outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) and junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fl./Tampa Prep) as each recorded a team-high six kills. Sophomore libero Summer Goldberg (Marietta, Ga./Woodward Acadmey) paced W&L with 10 digs, while Schmitz and sophomore setter Jenna Finger (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township) added eight apiece. Junior setter Megan Steinhardt (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) led the Generals with 19 assists and Finger chipped in 14.
The Generals knocked off Averett 25-18, 25-18, 25-14. W&L received 12 kills from Philips and 11 from senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg). Senior middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) and Schmitz both chipped in seven. Schmitz paced the Generals with 18 digs while junior libero Kelly Harrison (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) added 17, Phillips chipped in 13 and Ulrich 10. Steinhardt once again led the Blue and White with 39 assists.
W&L wraps up play at the Averett Invitational on Saturday, beginning with a 10:00 am game against LaGrange.
