ASHLAND, Va. – Sophomore center Molly Ariail tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and five steals to lead 20th-ranked Randolph-Macon to a 68-57 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening.
The game was tight early on and featured eight lead changes and three ties in the first half until the Yellow Jackets (12-1, 7-1) stretched out to a seven-point (30-23) advantage at the break.
The Generals (4-11, 3-7) began the second stanza with a 9-4 run sparked by nine points from senior forward Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) to cut it to a 34-32 game with 13:46 remaining, but R-MC methodically pushed out to an 11-point lead (46-35) with 6:46 to go. W&L cut it to seven points on two occasions in the final six minutes, but could get no closer as the Yellow Jackets nailed 8-of-9 free throws in the final 1:30 to seal the win.
The Generals limited Randolph-Macon to just 38.1 percent (24-63) shooting from the floor, but could not overcome 24 turnovers.
Senior forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) led W&L with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Kane tallied 14 points, 13 of which were scored in the second half. Junior guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) added 10 points.
Ariail went 9-for-9 from the foul line in leading the Yellow Jackets. Junior guard Amanda Hiltunen amassed 15 points, while junior forward Lindsay Riesbeck chipped in 12 points.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 2:00 pm contest.
