LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team finished fourth out of seven teams at the W&L Tournament held on Saturday afternoon at the Warner Center.
Mt. St. Joseph won the team title with 94.5 points, followed by Washington & Jefferson (71.0), Muhlenberg (68.5), Washington and Lee (58.5), Scranton (51.0), Waynesburg (32.5) and Southern Virginia (28.5). Mt. St. Joseph junior 149-pounder Elliott Spence was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler.
Senior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) led the Generals with a first-place finish in the 165 pound bracket. Boniello received a first-round bye then defeated Southern Virginia's Julian James, 6-1, in the semifinals, before knocking off MSJ's Josh Sasfy in the finals, 7-2.
Seniors Peter Lawrence (Greenwich, Conn./Loomis-Chaffee), Tim Manson (Lookout Mountain, Tenn./Baylor School) and Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and junior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all finished third in their respective weight classes.
Lawrence went 3-1 overall and defeated Shaun Yackey of Washington & Jefferson, 7-5, in the third-place match of the 149 pound weight bracket. Manson also went 3-1, pinning (1:58) freshman teammate Keith Jaworski (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) in the 157 pound weight class. Adamson went 3-1 and downed sophomore teammate Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake), 3-0, for third at 184 pounds, while Christopher notched a 3-1 mark and defeated Bill Sholly of Muhlenberg in the third-place match, 5-1.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they host the W&L quad at 12:00 pm.
