WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sophomore forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. Johns) tallied the game's lone goal to lead the Washington and Lee field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Catholic in its season opener on Saturday evening in Washington, D.C.
With the score knotted at 0-0 after the first half of play, Armstrong found the back of the net at 44:09 after her initial shot was saved by CUA goalkeeper Marion Cassilly and rebounded to her. Armstrong's first attempt at a score was set up by senior midfielder Kendall Korte's (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) penalty corner.
Senior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the entire contest for Washington and Lee (1-0), notching eight saves. Irene Jorden started the contest for the Cardinals (1-2), but was spelled by Cassilly for the second half. Jorden made five stops, while Cassilly made 10 saves.
W&L returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Centre College at the W&L Turf Field at 1:00 pm
