ASHLAND, Va. – Randolph-Macon scored 30 unanswered points over the second, third and fourth quarters to produce a 42-17 victory over Washington and Lee in ODAC Football action on Saturday afternoon at Day Field.
The Yellow Jackets (4-1, 2-0) opened the scoring just 1:54 into the game on a 5-yard touchdown run by tailback Zak Thornton for a 6-0 lead. The ensuing PAT failed and W&L took the lead at 7-6 at the 10:12 mark on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by junior tailback Tom Pacicco (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic). Waddell Howard gave R-MC the lead back on the next play as he ran the kickoff back 79 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion failed, giving the Yellow Jackets a 12-7 lead just five minutes into the game.
W&L again retaliated, this time on a 2-yard touchdown run by Pacicco, for a 14-12 lead with 5:07 left in the opening quarter. A 34-yard field goal by Scott Shope gave the Yellow Jackets the lead back at 15-14 with 1:00 remaining in the opening period.
After both defenses produced a few stops, the Generals appeared to have taken the lead back following a 16-play, 89-yard drive, but Pacicco fumbled just prior to crossing the goal line and Randolph-Macon recovered in the end zone for a touchback and carried a 15-14 lead into halftime.
W&L fumbled the opening kickoff of the third period and the Yellow Jackets took advantage on a 4-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brandon Braner to tight end Stuart May for a 21-14 lead following another missed PAT. That was the first of four-straight R-MC touchdowns that included a pair of 1-yard touchdown runs by Thornton and a fumble recovery for a touchdown in the end zone by Ray Johnson that extended the Yellow Jacket lead to 42-14 early in the fourth quarter.
Pacicco paced the W&L offense with 102 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Sophomore quarterback R.J. Varner (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) completed just 8-of-15 passes for 59 yards and was intercepted three times. Senior defensive back Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) posted nine tackles to pace the Generals' defense.
Thornton carried 22 times for 89 yards and three touchdowns, while Braner completed 10-of-17 passes for 118 yards and one score. Defensive lineman Nate Shook led the Yellow Jacket defense that produced six turnovers with 11 tackles.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Catholic for a 1:30 pm contest.
