LEXINGTON, Va. -- Guilford snapped W&L's school-record seven-game winning streak with a 72-66 overtime victory in ODAC women's basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Warner Center.
W&L senior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks in the loss. In the process, she became the first women's basketball player in school history to record 1,000 career rebounds (1,004) and she also tied her own school record for season blocks (74).
W&L (12-9, 8-8) began the contest with a 16-2 lead in the first 10:03, but the Quakers methodically chipped away and found themselves leading 27-25 at the break. The game was back-and-forth in the second half and featured seven ties. Guilford led by as many as seven points (53-46) with 5:46 remaining, but the Generals went on a 10-0 run over the next 3:03 to take a 56-53 lead with 2:43 to play. The Quakers fought back and held a 61-59 lead with 17.0 seconds left, however W&L forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) hit a jumper with 3.3 seconds remaining to send the game to an extra session.
GC scored the first six points of overtime for 67-61 advantage at 3:25 and the Generals could claw no closer than two points (68-66) with 14.0 seconds left in the contest. Guilford connected on 5-of-6 from the line in the closing seconds to post the win.
The Quakers (8-14, 7-10) connected on 18-of-19 (.947) from the charity stripe, while the Generals hit 14-of-20 (.700). W&L out-rebounded GC, 57-40, but was hampered by 28 turnovers.
Hunsinger led the Generals with her sixth-straight double-double. Krouchick also registered a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while sophomore forward Kara Nadeau (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) accumulated career-high numbers in rebounds (13) and assists (6) and added nine points. Sophomore guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) chipped in 10 points and seven boards.
The Quakers were paced by freshman guard Ann Seufer (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown), who racked up 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from behind the arc. Sophomore forward Tracey Croner (Rockwell, N.C./East Rowan) tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman guard Joclyn Terry (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside) rounded out Guilford's double-figure scorers with 10 markers.
W&L returns to the court on Saturday when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va., to take on Eastern Mennonite at 3:00 pm.
