Generals Place Fifth at the 2007 Centennial Conference Championship

GETTYSBURG, Pa.. -- The Washington and Lee wrestling team competed in the Centennial Conference Championships hosted by Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Generals finished fifth out of eight squads.

Ursinus took the team championship with 85.5 points and was followed by Muhlenberg (74.5), Johns Hopkins (61.0), McDaniel (50.0), W&L (48.0), Stevens Tech (39.0), Gettysburg (30.0) and Kings Point (23.5).

On the day, the Blue and White had one runner-up finish, three third-place finishes and one fourth-place finish.

Junior Anthony Boniello (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) finished as the runner-up at 165 pounds. Boniello posted a technical fall over Kings Point's Trevor Muhler (17-1) in the first round and an 8-3 triumph over Mike Schwager of Ursinus, before getting pinned by Stevens Tech's Brandon MacWhinnie (1:36) in the championship bout. MacWhinnie was named the Centennial Conference Wrestler of the Year.

Juniors Jesse Sataloff (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) and Kirk Adamson (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher's) and sophomore John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) all placed third, while junior David Shubick (Bound Brook, N.J./Bound Brook) took fourth place.

Sataloff (174 lbs) pinned Aaron Balk of Gettysburg (1:30) in the first round, was pinned by McDaniel's Drew Winfield (2:57) in the semifinals and defeated Troy McGuinness of Kings Point, 3-2, in the third-place match.

Adamson (197) had a major decision, 17-7, over Ferris Bond of McDaniel in the first round, was then defeated by Muhlenburg's Matt Loesch, 9-1, in the semifinals and bounced back to defeat Stevens Tech's James Roarty, 11-4, to finish third.

At the heavyweight, Christopher downed McDaniel's Ryan Deiter, 5-2, in the first round, was defeated by Joe Tartar of Muhlenberg, 5-1, but responded with a 4-1 win over Jonathon Freeman of Johns Hopkins to take the bronze.

Shubick, competing at 133 pounds, was victorious in his first round match-up, pinning Michael Sumner of Johns Hopkins in 4:50, before being pinned by Ursinus' Trevor Beard (4:51) in the semifinal. He then lost to McDaniel's Steven Colasuonno, 5-3, in the third-place bout.

The Generals conclude their 2006-07 season with an 8-3 record and will return all but one wrestler in 2007-08.
