LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee women's basketball team concluded its regular season with an 80-64 win over Lynchburg on Saturday evening at the Warner Center.
The Generals (15-10, 11-9) owned a 22-17 advantage with 8:08 to play in the first half, but LC used an 8-0 run to take a 25-22 lead with 5:21 remaining in the opening stanza. W&L fought back with a 7-0 run of its own, leading 29-25 with 2:20 to play in the half and continued to hold on to the lead (35-31) at the break.
The Hornets (7-18, 7-13) opened the second half with a 10-4 spurt, taking a two-point lead (41-39) with 16:25 left in regulation. However, junior forward Hayley James (Mt. Sidney, Va./Fort Defiance) nailed a three-pointer on the Generals' next possession to give W&L the lead for good.
James paced the Blue and White with a double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds), hitting all four of her shots from long range. Junior forward Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) tallied 19 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while senior center Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) registered 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Junior forward Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) filled out the Generals' double-digit scorers with 11 markers.
Lynchburg was led by senior center Caroline Wesley's (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame) 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Brittany Dahn (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) also notched a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 boards, while freshman guard Amy Terry (Dublin, Va./Pulaski County) scored 12 points.
W&L will make its fourth-straight appearance in the ODAC Tournament on Friday. As the sixth seed, the Generals will take on third-seeded Eastern Mennonite at 8:00 pm.
