Women's Basketball vs. Newport News Apprentice

Freshman forward Tyisha Battle (Danville, Va./George Washington) registered 11 points and 14 rebounds to lead Newport News Apprentice to a 56-51 win over Washington and Lee in women's basketball action on Thursday evening at the Warner Center.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half and the score was knotted at 20-20 at the break. The Generals (2-6) opened the second stanza with a 14-3 run, taking a 34-23 edge with 16:25 left in the game. Apprentice (3-4) chipped away at the W&L advantage and tied the game, 38-38, at 10:14. Three lead changes and three ties ensued from that point on until a three-pointer by freshman guard Jasmine Gerald (Stafford, Va./Broad Run) with 1:10 remaing gave Apprentice the lead for good, 53-51, with 1:10 remaining. The Builders went on to sink three-of-four foul shots in the final 33 seconds to ice the game.

W&L held a 48-40 advantage on the boards, but committed 17 turnovers.

The Generals were paced by senior forwards Kristen Krouchick (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) and Amanda Kane (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson), who each tallied 14 points. Freshman center Felice Herman (Fairfield, Pa./Delone Catholic) registered six points and a team-high 13 rebounds.

Junior guard Rashann Lewter (Hampton, Va./Hampton) also scored in double-figures for NNA, totaling a game-high 18 points, while Gerald added 12 points.

The Generals will now take a 30-day hiatus for the holidays and return to action on Jan. 5 when they host Bridgewater at 2:00 pm.
