LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team posted a 161-96 victory over Centre, while the women were defeated by a score of 141-121 on Saturday morning at the Cy Tombly Pool.
On the men's side, the Generals were led by senior Will Hartmann's (Williamsburg, Va./Walsingham Academy) three first-place finishes in the individual events. Hartmann touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (55.96), 200-yard backstroke (2:02.78) and 200-yard IM (2:03.41). Junior Paul Crook (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell) also notched two first-place finishes in individual events. Crook finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.42) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:48.91).
Hartmann and Crook were joined by five more W&L swimmers, who also had first-place finishes. Sophomore Winston Stagg (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) was the first finisher in the 100-yard breastroke (1:02.96), while sophomore Josh Gonzalez (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (2:01.53). Senior Tim McGlaston (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) won the 50-yard freestyle (21:26), while senior Alex Sweet (Louisville, Ky./Kentucky Country Day) posted a first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (47.83). Sophomore Ian Childers (Ona, W. Va./Greater Latrobe) took gold in the 200-yard breastroke (2:17.62).
The men also swept the two relay events. The team of Stagg, Crook, Gonzalez and McGlaston placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1.38.68. Crook, sophomore Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kansas/Shawnee), McGlaston and Sweet finished first in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:11.90).
On the women's side, W&L was paced by junior Susan Mahoney (Richmond, Va./St. Catherine's) and junior Lindsey Strachan (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) with two first-place finishes apiece. Mahoney finished first in the 100-yard breastroke (1:13.54) and the 200-yard IM (2.19.68), while Stachan touched first in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.77) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.84).
Additionally, freshman Tess Hayden (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) took the gold in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 11:18.75 and junior Julianne Miata (Valhalla, N.Y./Westlake) was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (2:18.78).
The men return to action on Saturday as they travel to Gettysburg for a 2:00 pm meet. The women's team returns to action on Friday as they host Emory and Henry for a 7:00 pm meet.
