VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Junior defender Fletcher McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) connected on a penalty kick in the second half to lead Washington and Lee to a 2-1 win over Hampden-Sydney in the semifinals of the 2007 ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament held at Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday afternoon.
H-SC (11-6-3) took an early 1-0 edge in the 10th minute as Matt Swaney found the back of the net off a corner kick taken by Jason Powell. The Tigers held the lead for the next 30 minutes until senior forward Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) slipped one past H-SC goalkeeper John Robert Plyler in the 40th minute.
A Tigers' foul in the penalty box set up McCraw's PK, which gave the Generals the lead in the 47th minute, and W&L held on to post the one-goal victory.
Senior Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made three stops for W&L, while Plyler tallied five saves for the Tigers.
With the win, the Generals (12-2-3) advance to the finals of the ODAC Tournament for the first time since 2003. W&L will take on fourth-seeded Roanoke on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
