PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Carnegie Mellon's Robert Gimson and Travis Sivek each rushed for over 100 yards and combined for four touchdowns as the Tartans posted a 39-21 victory over the Generals on Saturday afternoon at Gesling Stadium.
CMU (6-4) took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a Gimson touchdown, but the Generals answered back as freshman quarterback Patrick Rouse (Lexington, Ky./Henry Clay) connected with senior wide receiver Jack Martin (Clayton, Mo./Hun School (N.J.)) on a 26-yard scoring strike to take 7-6 lead with 5:37 remaining in the first half. However, it was the only W&L lead of the afternoon as the Tartans scored 23 unanswered points and held a 29-7 lead with 2:41 to play in the third quarter.
The Generals rallied late, cutting the CMU lead to 29-21. Junior Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) capped off a 67-yard drive with a seven-yard scramble with three seconds remaining in the third quarter and senior Britt Jamison (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) recovered a fumble and returned it 35 yards for another score just 13 seconds into the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as CMU responded with a field goal and a touchdown to insure the win.
The Blue and White were hampered by six turnovers on the day, four interceptions and two fumbles.
Offensively, W&L was paced by Sitterson and Martin. Sitterson tallied his third-straight 100-yard rushing game with 144 yards and posted 338 all-purpose yards. Martin caught 11 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown. With his 11 receptions on the day, Martin became W&L's all-time leader in career receptions with 167, surpassing Colton Ward '07 (161). Martin also ends his career at W&L as the schools' all-time leader in career receiving yards (2,953) and career touchdowns (32). Rouse entered the contest in the second quarter and threw for a career-high 117 yards (13-of-29) with one touchdown and three interceptions.
Seniors Kyle Harvey (Columbia, S.C./Richland Northeast) and Scott Russell (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) led the W&L defensive with 14 tackles each.
For Carnegie Mellon, Gimson rushed for 161 yards on 27 carries with three scores, while Sivek totaled 125 yards on 34 carries with one touchdown. With their performances, both rushers totaled over 1,000 yards on the season. Quarterback Phil Pantalone was 5-of-8 passing for 86 yards and rushed for a score. The CMU defense was led by Jon Scholl and Dan Falkenstein, who each had nine tackles.
The Generals completed the season with a 6-3 record and tallied their fourth-straight winning season, something that had not occurred since W&L posted six-consecutive winning campaigns from 1980-85.
