W&L Volleyball Opens Averett Tournament with Two Wins

DANVILLE, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team opened play in the Averett Tournament on Friday evening with a pair of victories. The Generals downed Randolph-Macon in the opener, 30-24, 30-23, 30-17, before defeating the host Cougars, 27-30, 30-21, 28-30, 30-28, 16-14, in the nightcap.

In the win over the Yellow Jackets (8-7), the Generals were led by sophomore outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep), who tallied 16 kills and eight digs. Junior middle blocker Abbey Wilson (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) notched eight kills, while junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) posted six kills and 18 digs. Junior middle blocker Kassie Bagley (Midlothian, Va./James River) totaled six kills and five blocks, while sophomore setter Kristi Stevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) amassed 24 assists and 12 digs.

In the victory over Averett (17-8), Phillips again led the way with 20 kills and 11 digs. Maurer registered 16 kills and 21 digs, while senior right side Jess Hudock (Tampa, Fla./Holy Names) posted 14 kills, 17 digs and five service aces. Junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) added 11 kills and 14 digs and Stevens posted 29 assists, 22 digs and four aces. Senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) chipped in 27 assists and 13 digs.

Washington and Lee (12-5) returns to action on Saturday for the second day of the Averett Tournament. The Generals play Queens at 11:00 am and Greensboro College at 1:00 pm.
