LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee football team snapped a seven-game losing streak to Bridgewater as the Generals downed the 19th-ranked Eagles, 17-14, on Saturday afternoon in the final game played at the current Wilson Field.
W&L (5-2, 3-2) held Bridgewater to just 212 yards of total offense and limited the Eagles to just 3-of-15 on third-down conversions. The parents weekend crowd of 6,325 saw the Generals win the final game at the current Wilson Field, which will be rebuilt on the current site prior to next football season.
The Eagles (6-2, 2-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead just 4:12 into the game as senior running back Phillip Carter (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) scored on a 31-yard scamper to cap BC's opening drive of the game. However, the Generals' defense would stiffen and W&L knotted the game at 7-7 with 5:03 remaining in the first half on a 22-yard touchdown strike from sophomore quarterback R.J. Varner (Birmingham, Ala./Spain Park) to junior wide receiver Ty Parrino (Holliston, Mass./Holliston).
The Generals then assumed a 14-7 lead with 30 seconds left in the first half as Varner hooked up with junior wide receiver Billy Murray (Louisville, Ky./Trinity) on a 2-yard touchdown pass. Carter returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards to the W&L 18-yardline with 17 seconds left in the half, but W&L blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt by BC senior placekicker Kyle Beach (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park), his second miss of the opening half, to preserve a 14-7 lead at the break.
Senior cornerback Mark Snoddy (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) capped the Generals' first drive of the third quarter with a 23-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead with 9:01 remaining and another missed field goal by Beach late in the third quarter sent the teams into the final stanza with W&L leading 17-7.
The Eagles climbed to within 17-14 on a 9-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Jeff Highfill (Roanoke, Va./William Byrd) to senior wide receiver Brandon Copeland (Greensboro, N.C./Page) with 12:09 left in the game, but the Generals' defense held the Eagles on their final possession and the offense strung together an 11-play, 53-yard drive that drained the final 4:12 off the clock to end the game.
Junior wide receiver Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) led the offense with 216 all-purpose yards. He rushed 18 times for a career-high 103 yards, caught a team-high five passes for 51 yards and tallied 62 yards on returns. Varner completed 19-of-34 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns with one interception, while Parrino snared two passes for 32 yards and one touchdown. Senior defensive back Kyle Luby (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) totaled a team-best 11 tackles, while senior linebacker Bryant Fulk (Oceanside, Calif./St. Augustine) notched nine tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Carter paced the Bridgewater offense with 103 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries. Highfill completed just 8-of-20 passes for 75 yards and one touchdown, while Copeland caught five passes for 53 yards and one score. Senior defensive back Desmond Jalloh (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) led the defense with nine tackles.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 1:00 pm contest.
