LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Samantha Howard (Fairfax Station, Va./W.T. Woodson) tallied the game-winning goal and one assist to lead the Lynchburg field hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
The Hornets opened the scoring when Howard slipped a pass to senior forward Jessi Bowman (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill), who found the back of the cage at 12:29. Senior midfielder Kendall Korte (Virgina Beach, Va./Cox) then registered an unassisted tally at the 29:35 mark to tie the contest at the half.
Freshman defender Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) struck a shot past LC sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Cates (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) off of sophomore forward Sallie Armstrong's (Houston, Texas/St. John's) assist at the 47:56 mark. Sophomore forward Allie Weir (Richmond, Va./James River) answered back just 57 seconds later with an unassisted goal at 48:13 to tie the contest. Freshman midfielder Jenny Weir (Richmond, Va./James River) set-up Howard's game-winner, which happened 6:20 into overtime, to give the Hornets the win.
Senior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the entire contest for the Blue and White (10-6, 5-2), and registered six saves. Cates also played the entire duration and registered four saves for Lynchburg (15-5, 6-1).
This contest concludes the regular season for both teams. With the loss, the Generals become the third seed in the ODAC Tournament and will take on the sixth-seeded Bridgewater on Saturday. Game time has yet to be determined.
