NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team was defeated by fourth-ranked Christopher Newport, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Captains Field.
The Captains (14-1) opened the scoring in the first half when senior forward Diana Golden (Hampton, Va./Kecoughtan) slipped an unassisted shot past senior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore Md./Bryn Mawr) at the 4:39 mark. Senior forward Ashley Traylor (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) added to the scoring less than a minute later off of an assist from senior midfielder Ashley Hay (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) at 5:22 to give CNU a 2-0 edge at the half.
The score remained 2-0 through much of the second half, until CNU sophomore forward Anne Gehring (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) found the back of the cage unassisted at 58:30.
CNU out-shot W&L, 22-5, and held a 17-1 edge in penalty corners.
Rubenstein played the entire contest for the Blue and White (10-5) and registered nine saves. Freshman Elexa Nosonchuk (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) also played the entire game and made one save for the Captains.
The Generals return to action on Tuesday as they host Lynchburg for the final regular season match-up at 6:30 pm.
