Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Washington and Lee volleyball team notched two victories in the Christopher Newport Tournament on Saturday. The Generals downed Elizabethtown 30-23, 30-21, 17-30, 32-30, before snapping Christopher Newport's 20-match winning streak 30-32, 30-25, 31-33, 32-30, 15-6, in the nightcap.
In the win over Elizabethtown (20-6), W&L was paced by senior right side Jessica Hudock's (Tampa,Fla./Holy Names) 19 kills and 11 digs, while junior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg Area) registered 17 kills and 15 digs. Junior outside hitter Laura Maurer (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII) tallied 26 digs and 14 kills, while sophomore outside hitter Rachel Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) recorded 12 kills and 11 digs. Senior setter Lauren Rudolph (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) chipped in 12 digs and 29 assists, while sophomore setter Kristi Sevens (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission So.) notched 12 digs and 28 assists.
In the victory over CNU (21-6), the Blue and White were led by Maurer, who set a new W&L record for digs in a match (40) and racked-up 18 kills, while Phillips amassed 23 kills and 14 digs. Ulrich posted 18 kills and 22 digs, while Rudolph added 19 digs and 33 assists. Also making headway for the Generals (19-5) was Stevens, who totaled 15 digs and 43 assists, while Hudock chipped in 13 kills and 13 digs. Freshman outside hitter Marah Schmitz (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) also tallied 21 digs.
The Generals return to action when they travel to take on ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday at 6:30 pm.
