ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Sophomore forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas./St. John's) tallied two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the Washington and Lee Field Hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland on Saturday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
The Seahawks (8-4) opened the scoring when senior forward Marianne Wood (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield Mem) found junior forward Emily Norris (Timonium,Md./Dulaney), who tallied the first goal at 2:30. W&L senior forward Maggie Nugent (Louisville, Ky./Collegiate) responded off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Alex Caritis (Pittsburg, Pa./Shady Side Academy) at 5:58 and Armstrong found the back of the cage at 18:08 for a 2-1 lead. Shortly after Armstrong's stroke, Emily Norris tied the game 2-2 with a goal at the 19:36 mark.
Neither team would score through the second half, sending the game into overtime. Freshman defender Kelly Tran (Simsbury, Conn./Ethel Walker) set up Armstrong's game-winner, which occurred just 3:29 into the overtime session.
Senior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the entire contest for the Blue and White (7-3), registering one save. Senior Emily Richards (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) also played the entire contest stopping 13 shots for St. Mary's.
The Generals return to competition on Sunday as they travel to Mary Washington for a 2:00 pm contest.
