BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's basketball team connected on 65.9 percent (27-of-41) of its shots from the field to end a 21-game ODAC road losing streak with a 81-74 victory over Bridgewater on Saturday evening at the Nininger Hall.
The Generals, who had not won a conference game on the road since Feb. 14, 2004 (76-69 W at EMU), opened the game with an 11-point lead (15-4) in the first 8:32 of the game and never trailed for the duration of the contest, owning a 30-23 advantage at the break. The Eagles cut the lead to four points several times during the second half, but could never get any closer and W&L hit 9-of-12 from the foul line in the final 1:51 to preserve the win.
The Blue and White (7-4, 2-3) were led by junior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), who notched a game-high 26 points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior forward Femi Kusimo (Charleston, W.Va./Charleston Catholic) racked up a career-high 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) added eight points and five assists.
Bridgewater (4-7, 1-4) was also led by a pair of 20-point performances. Forward Jay Strotman tallied 21 points, while forward Josh Fox scored 20 markers. Guard Robert Rice rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11 points.
The Generals return to action on Wednesday when they host Emory & Henry at 7 pm.
