W&L Women’s Basketball Downs Lynchburg In Overtime, 76-68

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's basketball team ended a six-game losing skid with a 76-68 overtime victory at Lynchburg College on Friday evening.

The Hornets (2-9, 2-5) held a slim 28-26 lead at the break, but extended to a 40-32 lead with 13:50 remaining in regulation. However, the Generals (4-7, 2-6) then went on an 18-2 run over the next 4:47 to assume a 50-42 lead with 9:03 left.

W&L held the lead for nearly the remainder of regulation time, until Lynchburg freshman guard Rachel Leake nailed a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to knot the game at 62-62. W&L had an opportunity to win the game at the buzzer, but junior forward Kristen Krouchick's (Holland, Pa./Nazareth Academy) layup fell short.

The overtime period belonged to the Generals from the start as senior forward Jessica Hunsinger (Mayer, Ariz./Orme School) gave W&L the lead on a layup just 35 seconds into the extra session and the Generals never trailed again.

W&L pulled out the victory despite committing 38 turnovers and shooting just 24-of-40 from the foul line. The Hornets committed 32 turnovers themselves and shot just 29.1 percent from the floor, including 3-of-21 from three-point range.

The Generals were paced by Krouchick, who tallied a season-high 20 points and grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Bethany Ridenhour (Westwood, N.J./Holy Angels) posted a career-high 20 points and four assists, while junior guard Emily Wolff (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) contributed 13 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the foul line. Hunsinger added 10 points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals.

Lynchburg was led by senior center Caroline Wesley, who recorded 25 points and 16 rebounds. Freshman guard Kristina Darby and freshman forward Brittany Dahn each chipped in 10 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it travels to Randolph-Macon Woman's College for a 3:00 pm contest.
