LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the game's first 8:37 in cruising to a 9-0 win over Sweet Briar in ODAC Field Hockey action on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field.
The Generals (5-2, 2-0) opened the scoring just 1:04 into the game as junior midfielder Kay Dyt (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) found the cage off a feed from sophomore forward Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate). Freshman forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's) scored off an assist from senior forward Amy Volkmann (Norfolk, Va./Granby) just 3:16 later and Merchant scored off an Armstrong helper just 4:17 later for the 3-0 lead.
W&L added three more scores before halftime and the Generals' defense held the Vixens (1-7, 0-5) without a shot in the contest in producing a nine-goal victory and the team's third shutout of the season.
Merchant and Armstrong led the Generals with one goal and one assist each. Junior Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) and freshman Caroline Habliston (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) combined for the shutout in goal.
Juniors Cat Cox (Prince Frederick, Md./Calverton) and Alex DiFeliceantonio (Wilmington, N.C./Amy Bradley) both played in goal for Sweet Briar, combining to make five saves.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it travels to Bridgewater for a 4:00 pm contest.
