LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team was defeated by Johns Hopkins, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from freshman midfielder Brittany Bland (Littleton, Colo./Colorado Academy) at 24:26 and senior midfielder Amy Soergel (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) at 29:17 on a penalty stroke. The Generals responded in the 32nd minute when freshman forward Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph) scored off an assist from freshman forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) to cut JHU's lead to 2-1 at the half.
W&L (4-2, 1-0 ODAC) did not score in the second period of play and Hopkins (4-4) got on the board twice off goals from sophomore forwards Emily Miller (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Adair Landy (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) to put the game away, 4-1.
Junior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the entire contest for the Generals and notched a career-high 12 saves. Senior Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) saw the majority of minutes in goal for the Blue Jays, registering seven saves.
Landy and Soergel led Johns Hopkins with one goal and one assist each.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Sweet Briar at 7 pm at the W&L Turf Field.
