W&L Football Defeats Centre, 24-15

DANVILLE, Ky. – Senior quarterback Hunter Dawkins (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) threw for 246 yards and two touchdowns as the Washington and Lee football team won its second contest of 2006 with a 24-15 victory over Centre on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Ky., at Farris Field.

The Generals netted the first points of the contest when Dawkins found senior wide receiver D.J. Hackett (Montgomery, Ala./ Montgomery Academy) in the end zone on 2nd-and-29 for a 35-yard score with 10:25 remaining in the first, capping off a 10-play, 80-yard drive. Sophomore running back Stuart Sitterson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) put W&L in scoring column again when he scored a touchdown from one yard out at 2:11 in the first quarter.

Centre responded with a touchdown of its own at 6:15 in the second when quarterback Kevin Phelps hooked up with Justin Jones for a 22-yard reception. The Colonels' momentum was interrupted by another crack in the scoring column by the Generals with a 31-yard field goal by senior Ben Long (Frankford, W.Va./Hargrave Military Academy) with 1:59 left in the first half. Long's field goal, which put W&L up 17-7 at the break, was his 25th career field goal and broke the school record for career field goals previously set by Bill Devine (1979-82).

Neither team connected for any points in the third quarter and the score remained 17-7 until 12:25 in the fourth when junior wide receiver Jack Martin (Clayton, Mo./Hun School (N.J.)) snagged a 63-yard touchdown reception from Dawkins. The Colonels rallied in the fourth quarter after a safety and 5-yard touchdown run by Phelps cut the margin to 24-15, but the Generals held on for their second-straight victory.

W&L was led by Dawkins, who completed 14 of his 28 attempts. Martin caught three passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, while Sitterson pulled down eight passes for 81 yards and carried the ball 20 times for one yard and a touchdown. Sophomore running back Tom Pacicco (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) also handled the ball nine times for 60 yards.

On defense, the Blue and White were paced by junior defensive back Jimmy Gift (Richmond, Va./Collegiate), who notched seven tackles and one interception. Sophomore defensive lineman Tommy Matteo (Worcester, Pa./Germantown Academy) added six tackles and a sack to the Generals' defensive effort, which held Centre to just 268 yards of total offense. Matt Johnson led CC with ten tackles and 0.5 sacks.

Phelps completed 24-of-41 passes for 217 yards, one touchdown and one interception to lead the Colonels. Jones caught eight passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, while Adam Blandford rushed for 39 yards off eight carries.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it opens conference action against Randolph-Macon at 1 pm at Wilson Field.
