LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee field hockey team knocked off nationally-ranked No. 16 Catholic in a 2-0 upset at the W&L Turf Field on Friday evening.
The game remained scoreless throughout the first stanza of play and into the second half until freshman forward Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) scored the Generals' game-winning goal at 43:24 off an assist from freshman forward Steph Mansey (Mendham, N.J./Randolph). Senior forward Amy Volkmann (Nofolk, Va./Granby) iced the game with her unassisted tally with just over a minute to play in regulation to send W&L to the 2-0 win.
The Generals' win over the Cardinals (4-2, 1-0 CAC) was not only their first win over CUA in program history, but also their first defeat of a nationally-ranked opponent.
Junior goalkeeper Tara Rubenstein (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) played the duration for the Generals, picking up her second shutout of 2006. CUA's goalkeeper sophomore Betsy Homan (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) recorded five saves in the loss.
The Blue and White (4-1, 1-0 ODAC) return to action on Sunday as they host Johns Hopkins at noon at the W&L Turf Field.
