WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and rode that advantage to a 2-1 victory over Catholic University on Sunday afternoon in Washington, D.C.
The Generals (2-0) got on the board just 5:19 into the contest on an own goal by the Cardinals. W&L senior forward Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took a shot that was inadvertantly kicked into the CUA goal by a Cardinals defender that was attempting to clear the shot. W&L added to its lead at the 17:50 mark, when senior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) made good on a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead.
Catholic (0-2-1) rebounded with a Matt Brady goal off an assist from Daniel Clifford at the 18:09 mark, but neither team found the net again in the contest.
Junior Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Generals, making two saves. Joe Schettino played the entire contest for the Cardinals, posting seven stops.
W&L looks for its first 3-0 start since the 2003 campaign when it hosts Bluefield College at Watt Field on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
