W&L Men's Basketball Downs Lynchburg, 78-71, in Overtime

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Lynchburg sophomore guard Kwame Safo (Vienna, Va./Marshall) forced overtime by hitting a jumper with six seconds remaining, but Washington and Lee scored eight of the first nine points in the extra frame as the Generals defeated the Hornets, 78-71, in ODAC men's basketball action on Sunday afternoon at the Warner Center.

Lynchburg (3-19, 3-12) led 31-30 at the half, but the Generals assumed the lead early in the second half and extended to a 47-40 advantage with 12:58 remaining in the game. The Hornets clawed back to regain the lead at 50-47 with 8:01 remaining in regulation on a three-pointer by senior guard Matthew Sweeney (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown), but W&L took the lead back (63-61) with 1:30 left in regulation on a layup by sophomore forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), setting up Safo's game-tying shot.

In the extra frame, the Generals (3-17, 3-12) took the lead on a jumper by junior guard Chris Halkitis (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) just 31 seconds into overtime and never trailed again, leading by as many as 10 points (78-68).

W&L was led by Bienemann, who scored 17 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Sophomore forward John Mumper (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) also tallied 17 points and six boards, while Halkitis notched 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Isaiah Goodman (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) added 12 points.

Lynchburg was paced by Sweeney's 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Senior guard Andy Albright (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) chipped in 11 points.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it travels to Emory & Henry for a 7:00 pm contest.
